Probiotics & Prebiotics

Probiotics and inulin (prebiotic) work in harmony to help your stomach in numerous ways.
Probiotics
The World Health Organization’s 2001 definition of probiotics as “live micro-organisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host."

Commonly claimed benefits of probiotics include:
  • The decrease of pathogenic gastro-intestinal microorganisms (the harmful stuff)
  • The reduction of gastro-intestinal discomfort
  • The improvement of the skin’s function
  • The improvement of bowel regularity
  • A reduction in gas (flatulence), abdominal pain and bloating
  • The maintaining of beneficial intestinal bacteria in subjects receiving antibiotic treatment
Ganeden’s BC30 was chosen for the Gusto-to-Go beverage because:
  • Supports the digestive system (digestive health and function)
  • Supports the immune system (immune health and function)
  • Delivers active live probiotic cultures more effectively than common yogurts
  • This probiotic strain is safe and has the first FDA-issued GRAS-status rating
  • This strain is proven to survive the extremes of manufacturing
  • It is also designed to survive the harsh digestive environment of the stomach (where most other probiotics go to die – before they ever get a chance to work)
  • The Ganeden-backed research of 22 published clinical studies and trials have been positively peer-reviewed
Prebiotics
Common Synonyms: Long-chain Oligosaccharides, Chicory Extract

Inulin is a naturally occurring starchy substance found in a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Most inulin used for health purposes comes from chicory roots.

Inulin has been shown to be helpful when mitigating high blood fats, including cholesterol and triglycerides. Inulin has also been used for weight loss, constipation, and as a food additive to improve taste. Inulin included in the Gusto to Go formula has been demonstrated to conform with current Food Chemical Codex requirements.

How does Inulin work?

Inulin is not digested or absorbed in the stomach. It goes to the intestines to help feed and grow beneficial bacteria. Thus, inulin supports the growth of “probiotics” that are associated with improving intestinal function and general health.

When inulin is coupled with the Bacillus Coagulans probiotic from Ganeden (both in the Gusto-to-Go formula), there was a measured and marked increase in short chain fatty acids, which are important components for human intestinal health.

Enzyme Systems Blend

Protection against everything from digestive discomfort to diminished energy.
What they do:
“Enzymes help break down food into small nutrients (proteins, fats or lipids, cellulose or plant fibers, and carbohydrates) so the body can properly use them for health, energy, endurance and immunity.”
The Importance of Enzymes:
In the recent 20-years, healthcare professionals has become more aware of the possibilities that exist for enzyme utilization. Medical practitioners, such as gastroenterologists, often are recommending enzyme supplementation to their patients.

The Benefits of Enzymes:
The public increasingly is turning to enzyme supplements as protection against everything from digestive discomfort, diminished nutrient absorption, pancreatic maladies to diminished energy.

Digestive Health:
Enzymes are recognized as having a positive influence on digestion. Nearly everyone who has experienced occasional indigestion can benefit from a well-formulated digestive enzyme blend.

Enzymes clearly improve health, nutrition uptake, metabolism, inflammation, immunity and cardiovascular health. Even vitamins do nothing without first being prepared by proper enzyme-enhanced digestion so the body will be able to absorb them.

Summary:
The human body has approximately 10 trillion cells. They all need enzymes to function properly. None of our organs will function without the contributions of enzymes.

What disrupts the making or using of Enzymes?

Health issues, poor quality foods, inappropriate cooking methods and even age may reduce the body’s ability to utilize natural enzymes. This means older individuals may not be absorbing all of the protein they eat.

Nearly all digestive issues – cramps, acid reflux, allergic reactions, gas, flatulence, irritable bowels and bloating may be reduced through enzyme supplementation.

When the digestive system is as efficient as it can be, the resulting improved nutrient and protein uptake will positively impact overall wellness issues like immunity, cardiovascular health, energy creation, fat burning, etc.

The enzymes in the Gusto to Go beverage mix have GRAS-status (the FDA term standing for “Generally Recognized As Safe).

Modified Citrus Pectin
Common names: Apple Pectin, Fruit Pectin, Grapefruit Pectin, Lemon Pectin

Description: Modified citrus pectin (MCP) is a form of pectin that can be more easily absorbed by the digestive tract. Pectin is a carbohydrate found in most plants and is particularly plentiful in the peels of certain fruits. Pectin in its natural form cannot be absorbed by the body and is considered a type of soluble dietary fiber. Modified pectin can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Citrus pectin is categorized as “Generally Regarded As Safe” (GRAS) by the FDA.

Highlights of Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP)
  • Pectin binds substances in the intestine and adds bulk to stools
  • Promotes immune function
  • Supports cellular health
  • Supports cardiovascular health (for high cholesterol and/or high triglycerides)
  • Supports healthy function of multiple organs
  • Safely chelates heavy metals and toxins
  • Pectins have been used for diarrhea, diabetes and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

Stomach Ease Blend

The Dream Team: Chamomile + Ginger + Amino Acid (L-Glutamine)
Chamomile
Scientific Names: Matricaria recutita, Chamaemelum nobile

Tradition: Chamomile is a common tea and a popular home remedy for many conditions, including skin and stomach discomfort. According to the FDA, chamomile is considered ‘GRAS’ (Generally Recognized As Safe).

Ginger
Scientific Name: Zingiber officinale

Tradition: Since the 1500s ginger has a long history of human consumption in both the East and the West. The oil and resin of ginger is often contained in digestive products, cough suppressants, anti-gas products, and laxatives.

Ginger has historically been used as an antacid, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, antiseptic, antispasmodic and antiviral. For us in treating constipation, diarrhea, dysentery (bloody diarrhea), gas, immune system disorders, immune system stimulation, intestinal parasites, irritable bowel syndrome, malabsorption, stomachache and vomiting (general).

According to the FDA, ginger is considered ‘GRAS’ (Generally Recognized As Safe).

Amino Acid
Background: Glutamine plays an important role in many functions of the body, including acid-base balance, nitrogen supply, and formation of DNA, protein, and other nutrients. Glutamine is also commonly used to improve general immune system health and for exercise performance enhancement.
What are Amino Acids?
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and are essential to nearly every bodily function. The human body does not store them for later use. Failure to get enough of them can result in protein degradation.

The largest user of glutamine are the cells of intestines, the kidney cells for the acid-base balance, and activated immune cells. The immune system is one of the first systems to suffer as a result of an amino acid deficiency.

L Glutamine is considered Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) per the FDA.
